If a night of scintillating entertainment filled with laughter, a bit of cabaret, soothing jazz and sassy, upbeat A Cappella renditions are what you’re after, then Track Five’s upcoming performance at the Drostdy Theatre in Stellenbosch on 23 November is not to be missed.
Rated amongst the best vocal groups in South Africa, Track Five returns to the Boland town following the successful launch of their fifth CD, Love You Madly, in April this year.
According to Track Five’s founder and baritone singer, Gavin Fullard, this will be the first time that they – longstanding members Fullard, Michelle van Zyl (2nd alto), Arthur Pietersen (bass) and new members and qualified musicians, Madri Gerber (soprano) and Karen de Goede (1st alto) – will be performing together on stage after Pietersen underwent surgery earlier this year.
“We are just so happy to have Arthur back on stage with us again,” says Fullard. “The evening is therefore also a celebration of his return and our line-up promises to offer something for everyone, with some familiar and some new sounds to be heard.”
Joining Track Five for their concert dubbed An Unforgettable Connexion, is jazz musician Ramon Alexander (keyboard), Leonore Bredenkamp (bass), Annemie Nel (drums) and Fullard’s wife, Engela Fullard (flute). Together they will keep audiences on the edge of their seats as they deliver a range of some original compositions by Fullard, Afrikaans favourites with a twist, and a number of well-loved jazz classics.
Ever the romantic and a skilled composer to boot, Fullard will be performing his recently crafted Connexion – a song which he describes as “a thinly veiled marriage proposal”– along with the rest of the group for the first time at the Drostdy.
“We would love to show our audiences how jazz, which can be the equivalent of a swear word to some people, can be hauntingly beautiful, yet exciting at the same time and that one can be original, yet add a tasteful twist to old favourites too.”
Asked about the group’s plans now that Arthur is back on his feet, Fullard’s excitement can barely be contained.
“Well, we’re working on CD number six of course and hoping to release it late next year.”
Tickets for the 1 ½ hour show can be purchased at R120 at the Drostdy Theatre by contacting Lionel at email@example.com or on 071 931 9954.
